ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER w

1124 species

We collected more than 1100 animals beginning with the letter W.

One could expect to find a Wombat in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. For example, “wombat” is a group name for marsupials from the family Vombatidae that are native to Australia. There are three extant species in this family whose names are the following: Common wombat, Northern hairy-nosed wombat, and Southern hairy-nosed wombat. None of these animals start with the letter W.

For the same reason, you wouldn't find here a Whale as well, except for the White-beaked dolphin, which doesn’t even have the word “whale” in its name but belongs to Cetacea infraorder, an aquatic group of mammals commonly known as whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

All this could sound tricky, and that's why we collected a list of popular animal names beginning with the W letter. Here it is - Wallaby, Weasel, Wildebeest, Wolf, Wombat, Woodpecker, Whale, Walrus, Wisent, Wildcat, Warbler, Whistler, Worm, Wasp, Wren, Waterbuck, Weka, Wagtail, Waterthrush, Wattlebird, Waxbill, Waxwing, Weaver, Whimbrel, Wheatear, Willet, Whydah, Woodstar, Wooly Monkey, Walking Catfish, Walleye Fish, Water Buffalo, Whiptail Lizard, Wasp, Water Bug, Whale Shark, Woodrat, Water Dragon, Worm.
